Father's Day or Sugar Feast... who do you buy a scarf for?
2018-06-08 - Whether for Father's Day or Suger Feast, giving a scarf is always a pleasure!
It is a misconception that handicraft is typically women's work. A lot of men's hands have contributed to our scarves and shawls as well. This way many father's earned additional income to support their families.
Roles and tasks of men and women in the weaving process (think of carding, spinning, dyeing, weaving, finishing) are divided based on cultural habits and practical considerations. These differ per country as well as per weaving group.
The photo on the left shows one of the male weavers of the Afghan Arghand cooperative - something you won't easily see in, for instance, Bhutan. In this country weaving is a typical female activity.

Next Thursday and Friday many people celebrate Sugar Feast, followed by Father's Day on Sunday the 17th of June. A scarf or shawl can be a perfect gift!
